Patient Information Sheet: Telogen Effluvium
What is Telogen Effluvium?
Telogen Effluvium is a temporary form of hair loss characterised by excessive shedding of hair. It occurs when a large number of hair follicles enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle prematurely, leading to increased hair shedding and thinning.
Causes:
Telogen Effluvium can be triggered by various factors including:
- Physical or Emotional Stress: Significant stressors such as illness, surgery, childbirth, emotional distress, or major life changes can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle.
- Medical Conditions: Chronic illnesses like thyroid disorders, iron deficiency anaemia, autoimmune diseases, and hormonal imbalances can contribute to Telogen Effluvium.
- Medications: Certain medications including some antibiotics, antidepressants, retinoids, anticoagulants, and anticonvulsants may cause hair loss as a side effect.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients like iron, protein, vitamins (especially B vitamins), and minerals such as zinc can lead to hair loss.
- Crash Diets or Rapid Weight Loss: Drastic changes in diet or sudden weight loss can shock the body and lead to Telogen Effluvium.
- Pregnancy: Post partum telogen effluvium occurs 3-4 months after giving birth.
Treatment Options:
Treatment for Telogen Effluvium depends on addressing the underlying cause:
- Identifying and Addressing Triggers: Identifying and managing stressors, treating underlying medical conditions, or adjusting medications can help halt hair loss.
- Nutritional Supplements: If nutritional deficiencies are identified, supplementation with iron, vitamins, and minerals may be recommended.
- Topical Treatments: Minoxidil, a topical solution applied to the scalp, may promote hair regrowth in some cases.
- Oral Treatments: Oral minoxidil may be prescribed to maintain hair in the growing phase.
- Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques can support overall well-being and hair health.
Prognosis:
Telogen Effluvium is usually temporary, and most individuals experience regrowth within 6 to 12 months once the underlying cause is addressed. However, in some cases, it may take longer for hair to return to its normal density.
General Measures:
In addition to medical treatment, the following measures can be helpful in managing Telogen Effluvium:
- Gentle Hair Care: Avoid excessive brushing, tight hairstyles, and harsh treatments like hot styling tools or chemical processes.
- Balanced Diet: Ensure a diet rich in protein, iron, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy hair growth.
- Stress Management: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or seeking support from friends and family.
Remember, each individual’s experience with Telogen Effluvium may vary.
