As we get older, our skin naturally becomes thinner and drier. Dry skin can feel rough, itchy, and uncomfortable, and it may crack or become sore. The good news is that with some simple daily habits, you can help keep your skin healthy, smooth, and comfortable.
Below is a step-by-step guide to help care for your skin every day.
🛁 1. Keep Showers Short and Lukewarm
- Use warm water, not hot — hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils.
- Keep showers or baths to under 10 minutes.
- Limit bathing to once a day (or less often if you’re not sweaty or dirty).
🧼 2. Use Gentle Soap-Free Washes
- Choose soap-free or pH-balanced cleansers (e.g., QV Wash®, Cetaphil®, Aveeno®, Dermaveen®).
- Avoid harsh soaps or anything that lathers heavily — these can dry the skin.
- Use only a small amount of cleanser, and focus on the underarms, groin, and feet — other areas may only need a rinse with water.
🧴 3. Moisturise Every Day – and Often!
- Apply a moisturiser within 3 minutes of showering, while the skin is still slightly damp — this helps lock in moisture.
- Use fragrance-free, thick moisturisers like creams or ointments (e.g., QV Intensive cream or ointment, Dermaveen cream, Dermeeze Cream or ointment, CeraVe® cream, Epaderm cream or ointment).
- Moisturise at least once daily. Twice daily is even better, especially on the arms, legs, and trunk.
- Focus on dry areas such as shins, forearms, and hands.
🚿 4. Pat, Don’t Rub
- After washing, pat the skin dry gently with a soft towel — avoid rubbing.
- Be gentle, especially on thin or fragile skin.
🧣 5. Dress for Comfort
- Wear soft, breathable fabrics like cotton.
- Avoid wool or rough materials directly on the skin.
- Wash clothes with fragrance-free detergent if you have sensitive skin.
🔥 6. Avoid Things That Dry the Skin
- Limit time spent in air-conditioning or heated environments.
- Use a humidifier if your home is dry.
- Avoid long sun exposure, and use sunscreen when outdoors.
Simple changes make a big difference. With regular care, your skin can stay soft, healthy, and comfortable throughout your life.
