Patient Information Sheet: Hydroquinone Cream
What is Hydroquinone Cream?
Hydroquinone is a topical skin-lightening agent used to lighten areas of darkened skin such as hyperpigmentation, melasma, age spots, and freckles.
How Does Hydroquinone Work?
Hydroquinone works by decreasing the production of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. By reducing melanin production, hydroquinone helps lighten darkened areas of skin.
Usage Instructions:
- Application: Apply a thin layer of hydroquinone cream to the affected area(s) of the skin, usually once or twice daily as directed by your dermatologist.
- Sun Protection: Use a tinted SPF 50+ sunscreen and broad-spectrum protection UVB and UVA every day, even on cloudy days or whilst indoors. This helps protect the skin and prevent further darkening of the treated areas. If tinted sunscreen is not possible, then sunscreen with make up on top.
- Avoid Eye Area: Avoid applying hydroquinone cream near the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
- Duration: Do not use for more than 12 weeks due to the risk of worsening pigmentation.
- Discontinue Use: If irritation or sensitivity occurs, discontinue use and consult your dermatologist.
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Nursing: Do not use hydroquinone whilst pregnant or breast feeding.
- Allergies: Inform your dermatologist of any allergies or sensitivities you have before using hydroquinone cream.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include mild skin irritation, redness, dryness, or itching at the application site. These effects are usually temporary and may decrease with continued use.
- Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions are rare but seek medical attention if they occur.
Follow-Up:
- Attend scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and discuss any concerns or changes in your skin.
